The Science Castle Research Fund THK Award is a pillar of the THK Co-Education Project, which started in 2017. This year, 10 teams are taking on the challenge of solving problems using the LM Guide, a mechanical element component that has dramatically improved machine performance, including higher precision, higher speed, and labor savings in mechatronics equipment. The results of these young engineers' six months of work will come together at the Science Castle Kanto Competition to be held on Sunday, December 22.
\nThey have challenged themselves to develop new technologies that the world has never seen before through trial and error, while receiving advice once a month from THK employees. On the day of the competition, the students will give a presentation introducing the products they have developed and engage in heated discussions with the judges, THK's senior management. This presentation will be open to the public, so schools considering applying for research funding next year, as well as students and teachers interested in middle and high school student manufacturing, are encouraged to attend.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n

An exhibition corner will be set up in four Science Castle locations across Japan to introduce the Monozukuri teaching materials program developed by THK employees. This fiscal year, THK held manufacturing classes at junior high schools near its plants in Kofu, Yamaguchi, Yamagata, Mie, Gifu, and Niigata. The booth will also introduce LM guides and ball screws, which are indispensable for the \"manufacturing that solves familiar problems\" proposals solicited for the THK Award, and provide consultation for application.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n

Let's develop a robot arm \"Gradius\"!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In this program, teams work together to develop a robotic arm for a manned Mars mission. Using the knowledge they have learned, the students select parts, assemble the arm, and create a motion program to complete the robotic hand. There is more than one answer to each problem, and students learn how to determine the best solution through trial and error, which is an essential approach to manufacturing.<\/p>\n

2. Use \"rolling\" technology to carry out \"\u25cb\u25cb\"! <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a program that challenges students to solve \"problems\" in their school life under the theme of \"carrying heavy things. By collaborating with development professionals, participants learn the process of development, from observing the site of the problem, selecting parts, assembling, and discovering new problems through trial use, and experience the difficulty and fun of manufacturing.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n
